How To Break, Smash & Dance Past Your Own Style Barriers

Most people get set in their ways after a while. We don’t even realise we’ve been doing it for the most part, it just happens and it can take a little time to pry such habits out of our grip. Habits aren’t always bad of course, but sometimes they can limit us, especially if we feel constrained by them. For example, perhaps you’re tired of wearing the same fashionable items day after day, but don’t think that anything else suits you.

Actually, breaking past your own style barriers is both a liberating experience and, sometimes, a scary challenge. On the positive side, you have a world of fashion, fun, and experimentation to enjoy, and you can redefine yourself in ways you’ve never imagined, which is incredibly exciting. However, this journey can also be dripping with self-doubt and uncertainty. After all, it’s not just about trying a new look or approach; it’s about accepting or letting out a whole new aspect of your identity.

The good news is that you have nothing to prove. Who do you have to ask for permission? Certainly not us. Even if you try a new style and realise you hate it, such an experience can still be rewarding.

But how can you break down that internal resistance that your approach feels “wrong” to even try and attempt? Well, in this post, we hope to help you with that:

Enjoy The Process Of Educating Yourself

You don’t have commit to a massive new style upgrade right now. Start by educating yourself on different styles and trends, and understand why they appeal to you. Those you might have liked in your teen years could be back in fashion only with different name. There are a great deal of fashion magazines, blogs like ours, social media groups or influencers out there. You could even just people-watch in areas known for diverse styles.

For example, if you’re interested in minimalist fashion but aren’t sure how to make it work for you, always start by understanding its principles. Learn about the benefits of a capsule wardrobe and watch some guides on YouTube, consider the importance of high-quality basics, and the art of accessorizing minimally. If you want to try something new such as a brand new statement piece, you can learn from online guides, such as dermal piercing information to help remove all doubt.

It’s Fine To Start Small

If you just fake confidence to style yourself, you’ll be more likely to dive forward and actually feel it, especially when you’re trying something new. This is because you get to dip your toe in the shallow waters first, with small changes rather than a complete change in your look. This could involve trying a new colour into your wardrobe, enjoying a different hairstyle or even just wearing a wig to try it out, or experimenting with accessories both subtle and loud. It’s fine to be comfortable as you dissolve those barriers.

For instance, if you’ve always worn neutral colours, try adding a bold scarf or a statement piece of jewellery like a ring on your little finger. These small steps can make a big difference in how you perceive yourself and how others perceive you at the same time. Then you can step it up a little. Maybe you want to experiment with temporary tattoos before you start speaking to a real tattooist. No one worthwhile will ever judge you on starting small.

You Get To Define It Yourself, You Don’t Have To Accept A Template

It’s fine to get your style inspiration from a favourite celebrity, a style icon, or even a stranger on the street you thought looked super cool. Maybe you want to braid your hair because of your favourite Viking show. However, it’s essential to make sure that you’re not just copying someone else’s style but adapting it to suit your personality and lifestyle depending on your needs. Why, is that because you’re not good enough to do what they do? Quite the opposite. Your unique presence is so good that it deserves to stand on its own.

For example, if you admire a specific fashion influencer, pay attention to what you like about their style. Is it their use of colours, their choice of accessories, or just how they approach their style? You can take those tips, and then disregard other perspectives you don’t appreciate, such as their assertion wearing a thumb ring never compliments an outfit. Maybe you think it does, and that’s great.

With this advice, you’ll be well on your way to breaking past your style barriers and discovering a new, empowered version of yourself. Just remember that this should all go through the lens of what makes you happy, because then the work will have been worth it.
