In my quest to shop more sustainably I have been turning my attention to underwear. Trying to find sustainable lingerie is actually harder than I thought. However, I would like to share a brand with you called Daylight Lingerie, who have developed the world’s first fully biodegradable underwired bra.
Luxury brand, Daylight has been created by Leeds based friends, Aliss Oxley and Ellen Miller, who saw a gap in the market for sustainable yet flattering bras.
“We noticed that the sustainable bras on the market were often a crop-top style and never included underwire. We missed the flattering design of traditional bras and the support and shape that underwire provides.”
Daylight have created a collection of sustainable lingerie which includes the first fully biodegradable underwired bra. The bras are made from bamboo silk, organic cotton and natural rubber, making them naturally breathable. The bra’s patent pending technology includes a specially developed bioplastic underwire and a bioplastic clasp.
Unlike other bras which use synthetic materials, Daylight has designed theirs using materials from renewable resources and they are fully biodegradable.
“We wanted to create a range of lingerie that is comfortable, supportive, beautifully designed and completely biodegradable.”
According to Daylight, the average woman owns nine bras which equates to 45 plastic bottles. I had to count up how many I own which came to six, plus three sports bras so they are right there! And, if you do the maths then this equals 1.5 billion plastic bottles in just the UK. Most fabrics contain some form of plastic so they don’t biodegrade. When they are washed they release microplastics which end up polluting our rivers. Daylight bras are made from natural materials which will not shed any microplastics when they are washed.
The bras are made from bamboo which is hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial. The bamboo grows quickly and does not require huge amounts of water or any pesticides to be used. Because the roots spread it also does not need replanting.
Using organic cotton produces up to 46% less greenhouse gas than non-organic cotton. It does not pollute the environment and uses less water and energy.
Elasticity is provide by natural rubber which also ensures comfort for the wearer. And, the bioplastic in the underwire, claps and adjustable strap allows for full biodegradability.
You will be able to get your hands on the bras in three colours: white, rose and rust. If you’re anything like me then your underwear needs to match. Matching bottoms are available in two styles: full knicker and thong. They are made with a soft bamboo panel at the front and organic cotton sides. There is a smaller size range available, currently 30-38 B-E, with the aim of releasing more sizes in the future.
Daylight has launched on Kickstarter on 20th April and the campaign will run for 30 days. Production will take place once the campaign ends. Every bra purchased will come with a complimentary wash bag to help you care for your item. Daylight Lingerie are based in Leeds, UK, but shipping will be worldwide.
Daylight is live on Kickstarter until 20th May 2021.
I can’t wait to get my hands on some sustainable lingerie!
