If you want to make your wardrobe last longer, you need to look after your clothes. There are lots of things that can affect your clothes and cause damage, leading you to have to repair them or replace them much sooner. During the summer, there are some particular risks that you might want to look out for if you want to protect your clothes. By doing the right things to keep your clothes in good condition, you can save money and keep your favourite pieces, while also making your wardrobe more sustainable. Here’s how to protect your clothes during the summer.

Be Careful with Sunscreen, Fake Tan, and Other Substances

You can end up using a number of different products during the summer, both for health and hygiene reasons and to make sure you look your best. As well as the usual risks of getting deodorant and makeup on your clothes, you might also need to worry about things like sunscreen, bug spray, or fake tan. One thing that you can do is to make sure these things have dried after application before you start to get dressed. You can also choose products that won’t stain your clothes and that will dry quickly.

Keep Maxi Dresses and Skirts Off the Ground

A flowing maxi dress or skirt is perfect for hot days. It lets the air flow around you and can be a lot cooler than wearing tight trousers or even shorts. But if you’re a fan of them or want to try one out, make sure it’s the right length. If it’s too long, it could end up trailing on the ground and you might trip over the hem too. If you’re on the shorter side, try looking for a petite skirt or dress that’s the right length. Another option is to tie a knot in one side of the hem, which will lift the whole thing up – although it might stretch your skirt. Altering it to take off a couple of inches is also a possibility.

Regulate Your Home’s Temperature

If your home is particularly warm, it could be bad for your clothes. Anything currently in your wardrobe or stored away for the summer could suffer, as well as the clothes you’re wearing. If you’re sweating indoors, it might not be great for your outfit. Keep your home cool, whether it’s through air conditioning or using fans. If your AC breaks, get a 24 hour AC service to take care of it for you. Not only will it protect your clothes but you’ll feel better too.

Protect Your Stored Autumn/Winter Clothes

If you’ve put away some of your autumn and winter clothes for the summer, take a couple of steps to protect them while they’re in storage. If you pack them and store them correctly, you can prevent problems such as moths, mould and mildew, and other issues that might affect them while in storage.

Protect your clothes this summer to keep a sustainable wardrobe and look your best all through the season.
