I am paler than pale. I would actually give Casper a run for his money. Some people look amazing with naturally pale skin but unfortunately I am not one of them. I look a million times better with a tan and as I don’t like to cook myself in the sun, fake tans are the way forward.

I used to have regular spray tans every two weeks but started to find that tan just doesn’t stay on my skin. When it comes to showering off the fake tan pretty much all colour comes off with the developer. Because of this I have tried nearly every brand on the market. I don’t know if this happens because I am just so pale. I do find that when you use fake tan, and are particularly pale, you run the risk of looking slightly orange. With this in mind I thought that I would put together some of my favourite tans to help you choose which one is right for you.
Fake Tans
Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Tan
I have tried other Bondi Sands products and loved them as they give a nice golden colour with no hint of orange. They also smell nice rather than like soggy biscuits. I gave Liquid Gold a go because it is a dry oil which means that you don’t need to wash it off eliminately the risk of losing colour down the drain. I’ve written a more thorough review of this tan before which you can check out. I found that a light even coat gives the best, most natural looking finish.
Skinny Tan Pro Moisture Mousse
The Skinny Tan Pro Moisture Mousse feels like it has a very light consistancy and a pleasant smell, like all of the Skinny Tan products. I love that you can get dressed straight away and I experience no colour transfer on my clothes. It gives a flawless, even looking tan that gives a professional spray tan a run for it’s money. I have a full review on this product which goes into a lot more detail.
Vita Liberata Self Tanning Tinted Mousse
The Vita Liberata Self Tanning Tinted Mousse is the first at home tan I have tried from the brand. I have had their spray tans in the past so went for the medium shade mousse. The developer is not as dark on this tan as others I have used. It is recommended that you leave it on for 4-8 hours. I generally leave it for about 6 hours because I don’t have the patience to leave it on any longer and I hate sleeping in tan. It gave me a very light sunkissed glow that looks natural. Personally I would put two coats of this on because I like to be quite dark.
Skinny Tan Express Mousse
The Express Mousse from Skinny Tan was actually sent to me for review a while ago. If you want to you can check out my full review. This is probably my favourite tan at the moment. It gives a great natural colour, smells nice, is easy to apply and has a streak free finish. You can leave it on for 1-3 hours depending on how dark you want to be. I always leave it on for three just to give my skin the maximum amount of time to absorb it.
Skinny Tan Wonder Serum Express
Again this product was also sent to me for review. I prefer express products so that I don’t have to wait around for hours. They’re also great if you decide to tan last minute before going out. This serum has such a great colour you could tan and then get dressed without getting colour transfer on your clothes.
Top Tanning Tips
- Always exfoliate first
- Moisturise elbows, knees and knuckles (if you have super dry hands like me)
- Apply using a tanning mitt for a streak free finish
- I avoid having a hot shower before tanning as this opens up your pores. I have quite large pores on my legs which can be highlighted by tan.
If I had to really pick my favourite it would be between the Skinny Tan Express Mousse and the Skinny Tan Pro Moisture Mousse. They are both really easy to us, give great results and leaves pale skin with a natural looking tan.
I love the Vita Liberata. I’m no expert and it never seems to leave streaks! Lovely post.
