How To Find Your Personal Style

So many of us buy items we see in store but never get the wear out of. Maybe we don’t own anything in our wardrobes that we can wear with it. Maybe it is a trend that just never suited us. I have gone through phases where I have felt that I have no personal style. Don’t get me wrong I love nothing more than experimenting with my look but quite often you want to be able to throw on an outfit and look good, feel good and know that it suits you without having to worry.

How to Find Your Personal Style

I have put together some handy tips to help you find your personal style and create a wardrobe of clothes that you get the wear out of, and most importantly, love.

Step One: Get rid of what you don’t wear

I’m currently reading ‘The Life Changing Magic of Tidying’ by Marie Kondo and will be writing a post about clearing out my wardrobe so that it ‘sparks joy’. I tend to clear out my wardrobe quite often but I still feel like it needs a bit of work. I generally have three piles; keep, donate and sell. Be ruthless, if you never wear it then get rid and avoid keeping things just in case you find something to buy that will go with it. This never happens.

Step Two: Look for a running theme

With the items that are left see if you can spot any running themes. Obviously if you work in an office environment then you are probably going to have a lot of work wear. But, in this case focus on what you wear outside of work.  Think about why you are drawn to these pieces. Is it comfort? Style? Material? Fit? Colour?

Step Three: Body shape

You might want to enlist the help of someone else at this stage. The idea is to find out what really suits you so someone that you trust who will be honest could be an asset. Feel free to try things on and even take photos of different outfits (this can come in handy when choosing what to wear). Pay attention to which colours suit your skin tone and which silhouettes are flattering.

Step Four: Wear what you love

We should all love what we wear and it is my dream to create a wardrobe of clothes that I adore. You personal style is something that you will wear for years to come. So many of us wear the same thing over and over again. Rather than ignoring that we should be paying attention to those pieces and basing our wardrobe around them. When you go shopping don’t buy what you think you should be wearing, buy what you know you will get the wear out of.

My Personal Style

If you take a look in my wardrobe it will be mainly full of jeans and shirts. These are the pieces that I tend to live in, particularly over the winter months. This makes it easy for me to put together outfits for casual wear. I don’t tend to go ‘out out’ much so I don’t have much need for going out clothes but if I do then it is easy to add a pair of heels to give my style a dressier look.

Now we are getting into the warmer weather I am keen to try dresses and skirts as I do get a bit on the warm side in my jeans. I also have a launch party to go to this month and I will be wearing a dress for it. It is plain and navy so nothing to crazy and it will ease me into wearing dresses quite nicely.

Do you have a style you tend to stick to?

Great post, Gem. I need to make time to sort out my wardrobe. I definitely have clothes that I could do without! I’m not sure I have a personal style, as such. It kind of depends on my mood and what I’m doing (which makes it even harder to have a clothes sort out!). Can’t wait to see your dress at the launch 🙂 xx

I do think I sometimes throw on something a bit random but I guess it’s ok to experiment with different looks. Hopefully it won’t be too cold later for it!xx
